Cleopatra and Frankenstein

this is a contemporary romance novel (a genre I’m not usually fond of), set in modern New York City which I’d rather recommend reading for the characters and their development than for the plot.
It did take me some time to get into the story, as the characters (a very cliché couple, a mean stepmother, jealous sister, gay best friend…) and parts of the plot just appeared too cliché, shallow and pretentious to me and lacked depth (I’d say in this matter you could compare it to a Colleen Hoover novel, although I liked C. Mellor’s style of writing way more and found it more intelligent).
But once I got into the story of relationships, shifting dynamics between characters, alcohol abuse, and mental illness, I couldn’t put the book down.

I found the writing, especially within the dialogues extremely witty and clever. This book was a fun and entertaining, rather easy read for me, which was what I expected so I won’t judge it for that. Despite the fun parts the author was also able to make me shed a tear several times. Mellors was able to create a vivid image of the scenery and the people and I’ll miss reading about them definitely.

Although I liked the book better before examining and judging the single aspects of it, I am excited for what’s about to come, as this is Coco Mellors debut novel only (although I do wonder what took her seven years to write that^^).
